<p><strong>What does a website need</strong>? The simple answer is repeat visitors, this is what successful websites share in common, and this accounts for a major part of their traffic.</p>
<p><strong>Why is this</strong>?</p>
<p>Well, experience shows that returning visitors are much easier to convert into paying customers because the more often they return to a site, the more trust they have in that site. The whole issue of credibility disappears.</p>
<p><strong>So what do you need to do to keep your visitors coming back and visiting your site</strong>?</p>
<p><span id="more-273"></span>How about checking out some of the solutions below:</p>
<p><strong>1) You could consider starting a forum, chat room or shout box.</strong></p>
<p>Providing a forum, chat room or shout box, allows your visitors to have a voice where they can share their opinions and interact with their peers &#8212; all of them visitors of your site.</p>
<p>Over time this develops into a sense of community and conversions will follow and your visitors will look forward to coming back to your site each and every day.</p>
<p><strong>2) This probably goes without saying, but starting a blog can be a fantastic source for both new and recurring traffic.</strong></p>
<p>Having your own blog is like keeping an online journal, and human beings are curious and thirsty for information. You need to keep your blog frequently updated with your latest news, both business and personal.</p>
<p>You will find that over time more and more people will come back to read your posts and with it you will develop credibility as an authority figure in your niche.</p>
<p><strong>3) How about carrying out polls or surveys?</strong></p>
<p>You will note that so far all the suggestions made have had some form of visitor interaction and conducting polls and surveys is no different. This is one that you should definitely consider adding to your site.</p>
<p>They are a quick way for visitors to voice their opinions and to get involved in your website. It is important that you publish the results of any polls or surveys so that you keep the interest of your visitors to come back and see the results.</p>
<p><strong>4) This is a little bit more innovative, but have you considered the use of puzzles, games and quizzes.</strong></p>
<p>This will provide a yardstick as to how many people are willing to return to your site if you are maintaining their interest through entertainment.</p>
<p>You can also hold competitions to award the high score winner to keep people trying continuously to earn the prize.</p>
<p><strong>5) This may appear just plain common sense, but you need to update your site frequently with fresh content if you wish to attract multiple visits.</strong></p>
<p>Although this may appear to be the most likely of strategies it is also the most overlooked with some sites seemingly looking the same for years.</p>
<p>If you want returning visitors to the same message over time that message needs a refresh, a different approach or angle!</p>
<p>Maintaining the same approach continually will have the effect of changing nothing, so don&#8217;t be lazy and add new fresh bites of information from time to time to increase your visitor&#8217;s interest.</p>

<p>A few weeks ago I found myself in the subway of New York City. Posters and billboards from a prominent bank promoted credit card decaled the underground landscape.</p>
<p>These well-crafted advertisements promised ten dollars back for every $100 spent on subway fares. It gave the current economic crisis and recession as the explanation for their incredible generosity and compassion.</p>
<p>Everybody around me seemed thoroughly impressed by this overwhelming gesture of selfless charity; many discussed in earnest how they were planning to sign up for this card to enjoy these charitable savings. It seemed I was the only one, the Christmas Grinch of the crowd, who perceived this advertisement strategy as more cunning and brilliant than selfless and generous. What an ideal time to hook people on yet another credit card, especially with the holiday season already upon us. Obviously the long-term interest this credit card company was anticipating far overshadowed their likely short-term promotional costs.</p>
<p>Indeed it was a cunning and brilliant strategy, much the same, I thought to myself, as Google&#8217;s page rank system.</p>
<p>At first glance it seems a very wise, fair and indeed brilliant system for determining positioning within the search ranks. On closer inspection, however, it is even more brilliant and cunning than most are giving it credit.</p>
<p><span id="more-270"></span>In the past, creating good, unique and newsworthy content, coupled with intelligent onsite optimization strategies, was at least enough to get your website found. These days are now gone, regardless of what some naïve or misleading SEO experts might still tell you.</p>
<p>Page Rank has now become the single most important factor in having your site found in the organic search results of the leading search engines. Page Rank is determined by the quantity and quality of websites that are linking to yours. Each website link acts as a kind of vote for the site it links to, and passes some of its own page rank to this site. The higher the page rank, and the more relevant the content of the site, the more significant the affect will be.</p>
<p>Since search engine bots cannot view your site in the same way a human views it, this strategy allows user popularity to have a significant affect on the algorithm these search engines are using. The belief is, of course, that the more quality and relevant sites that are voting for yours, the higher the probability that your site is a good one, and therefore deserving of a higher position.</p>
<p>Of course, this system is not perfect, and for obvious reasons, but it is certainly superior to deciding the importance of a site purely on onsite content. The reality is, there are thousands if not million of webmasters who can write unique, quality content. There are even more who know how to optimize this content for the search engines. However, millions of sites cannot be number one for a single keyword or phrase. Page rank must decide the difference.</p>
<p>The problem, however, is that the top search engines have now leaned so far away from onsite optimization, in preference of offsite optimization (i.e. page rank), that you are likely to find all kinds of lousy content and add riddled sites at the top of your searches. Putting a greater importance on links, however, plays significantly in Google&#8217;s favour. This is especially true today, as reciprocal and 3-way link exchanges have now been significantly devalued, along with paid links and link directories.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s intent is that links should be entirely organic, occurring naturally when other webmasters like your site enough to add a link to it. This way of achieving links however, can take a very, very long time, as most Internet users do not know that they are supposed to do this. Most Internet users add the sites they like to their favourites, they don&#8217;t create a keyword rich link to it from their own highly relevant site. Nevertheless, this is just one of the many ways Google favours older more time-proven sites over newer, get rich quick sites. The fact is, unless the content of your website has just revealed something of tremendous news importance, it could take years before your quality site acquires enough natural, keyword rich links from relevant sites to significantly boost you to the top of the search engines.</p>
<p>The conundrum, however, is that nobody will find your great content, and thereby link to it, unless you are on page one or two for at least one keyword or phrase (one that gets searched for that is). So if you do want to acquire natural one-way links, you pretty much have only one choice. You will have to advertise.</p>
<p>Google now provides the best online advertising available. Not only is it inexpensive, it is targeted towards your keywords.</p>
<p>This means a much higher conversion rate. People will find your product or service when they are looking for it, not when they are looking for something else. And with around 80% of North American searches done on Google, it just wouldn&#8217;t make sense to concentrate your efforts anywhere else (unless your loyalty lies elsewhere).</p>
<p>Knowing this, guess who will reap the largest rewards of this new lean towards offsite optimization? The reality is, if you want your internet site to one day make it to the top of Google (and Yahoo and MSN) for an important keyword or phrase, you will have to acquire a substantial number of natural links. Since this could take years, as most webmasters are selfish and don&#8217;t link for nothing, and most Internet users don&#8217;t know to do this, you are bound to spend a small fortune with Google before your site is able to stand on its own. Of course Google won&#8217;t make as much of a profit from you once your site is on the top, but there will be millions of others who will still be vying for this position.</p>
<p>The bottom line is, you will need to spend money if you one day want to make money.</p>
<p>The only question is how much money can you afford to invest? Or should I say gamble, because no matter how much money you spend, there are no guarantees.</p>
<p>The results, of course, are purely organic, and Google&#8217;s algorithm can change at any time. Besides, by the time you&#8217;re actually on the top, your content and unique features will likely be outdated and not that impressive anymore.</p>
<p>Google insists that you cannot purchase or pay for the organic results located on the left side of the screen. If you are caught purchasing links that are intended to indirectly improve your search engine ranking position, you will either be significantly penalized, or removed from Google entirely. However, the only significant way to increase naturally is to pay for advertising on the right side, so people can actually find your great content and unique features, and provide you with these natural links.</p>
<p>Of course, there are some other ways to promote your site, such as blogging, posting on forums, and creating videos on Youtube, etc. The catch is, however, that if you&#8217;re not careful, you will be penalized for spamming (excessively promoting your site where you are not supposed to). This is why most forums these days have the no follow meta tags added to their code. Otherwise, you will just have to get creative in achieving and maintaining high PR links that are relevant and keyword rich.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, if you do find a way to attain these links in any way that Google considers unnatural, it will eventually update its algorithm and ensure you are penalized for your imaginative endeavours.</p>
<p>Personally, I&#8217;ve never seen so many people work so hard at what is considered cheating. Couldn&#8217;t we at least give them part marks for creativity? After all, you won&#8217;t even let them see the marking rubric.</p>

<p><strong>Search engine marketing</strong> involves keeping your content fresh, using keywords that put you at the top of the first page and obtaining as many links to your site from other websites as possible.</p>
<p><span id="more-157"></span><strong>Pleasing the Search Engines</strong></p>
<p>1. <strong>Search engines love updated content</strong>. Pay attention to which sites show on the first page and you will notice that among the sites in keyword competition, it is the sites with the most updated content that win out. Either write your own articles and upload your own graphics and photos or outsource the job to freelancers.</p>
<p>There are many freelancers who write for reasonable rates. With one good writer or writing team, you can improve your site&#8217;s rankings dramatically. Make sure the writer you choose understands SEO.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Keyword strategies include</strong> going for those people who instead of searching for &#8216;weight loss&#8217; search for &#8216;how to lose 20 pounds fast&#8217; and other more specific terms. Do not stuff your pages with keywords. The recommended density of keywords is between 2 and 3 percent of the text on your page.</p>
<p>Excessive keyword phrases are not only recognizable to search engines as &#8217;stuffing&#8217;, they can ultimately affect the quality of the writing. This is where LSI comes in. LSI involves using phrases that are synonymous with your original keyword phrase. Learn about LSI!</p>
<p>3. <strong>The more relevant sites that link to your page</strong>, the better your rankings will be. For example, if you sell creative scrap booking products, try putting links about your self-designed scrap booking pages on sites that instruct people on how to scrap book. This is one way of &#8216;piggy backing&#8217; on the keywords used by other sites.</p>
<p>Write your own articles or have a freelance writer write some for you. Submit them to article directories and allow other sites to use them providing they leave the resource box or by-line connected to the article. It is a &#8217;scratch my back and I&#8217;ll scratch yours&#8217; strategy and it works for both sides.</p>
<p>4. <strong>You can use your blog for more search engine marketing</strong>. If you update your blog daily and ping it with blog directories, you will see an increase in your blog&#8217;s search engine rankings. Link to your site from your blog. This is another means of piggy backing.</p>
<p>5. <strong>Purchasing clicks on search engines</strong> is another strategy used in search engine marketing. This is how sites are placed in &#8217;sponsored sites&#8217; at the very top of the page and along the right hand side on Google. Depending on the keywords you use for this strategy, you will have to pay a few pennies to several dollars in order to beat out your competition.</p>
<p>Yahoo allows you to set a daily maximum amount of money for clicks. If your site is brand new, try the lowest amount of money for a week or so to test how many clicks you get and how many sales you make from those clicks.</p>
<p>6. <strong>Monitor your site traffic</strong> on at least a weekly basis. Note how much of your traffic is coming from regular search engine marketing. After a couple of weeks of tracking, make small changes to optimize your site&#8217;s search engine rankings. Continue looking for ways to improve on your site.</p>
<p>Gather all the information you can find on each of these strategies. Search engine marketing, as with all other forms of marketing, is constantly changing. Stay up to date on everything there is to know about search engine marketing and you will see your sales increase considerably!</p>

<p><strong>Is the current tough market the right time to be slashing your advertising budget</strong>? Not if you want your business to survive the economic downturn and lay the groundwork to thrive when the economy improves! Tough times may actually provide us our best opportunity to reach out to our customers with little or no competition because so many of our competitors are doing just the opposite of that in an attempt to save money.</p>
<p><strong>During good times everyone has the money (and bravery) to seek out clients, creating an atmosphere of extreme competition where reaching the consumer with your message proves to be exceedingly difficult</strong>. NOW is the time to have faith in your product or service, to reach out to your customers and to secure your success now and into the future. And there are easy and cost effective ways of doing so.</p>
<p><span id="more-136"></span><strong>There are some simple things that you can do</strong>. Everyone knows about the internet, but not everyone knows the free ways to get exposure on the internet. You can write an article about your industry, or a product, and submit it to one of the many sites that accept them. At the end of your article, you mention your business and have a link to your website. Each site has it&#8217;s guidelines on how the articles are to be written, so make sure to follow them. This will help establish you as a leader in your industry as long as the information you share is helpful and not self-promoting.</p>
<p><strong>Guerilla marketing is great in slow time</strong>. Have some flyers or postcards made. One of your employees or friends can design it or you can find an affordable place to do it for you. During your slow time, have your employees go to a busy area and hand them out. Now you are putting your message directly into the hands of prospective customers. Make sure you have an attractive offer that will entice people to visit your business. Obviously, this is mainly for businesses with a store front, but you can do guerilla marketing online as well.</p>
<p><strong>Guerilla marketing is done differently online</strong>. With blogs and social networking sites, there are opportunities to market your business in a different setting. You can create blogs and check the response you get from each entry which can help you check what the market is interested in at any given time. Or you can find blogs that have an issue that your company can help with. Respond to the blog with your company information. You can set up an account with a social networking site, giving more information about your business and connecting to other businesses to network and exchanges leads.</p>
<p><strong>Cross promote with other businesses, in other ways</strong>. If you&#8217;re feeling the pinch of the economy, most likely other businesses in your area/industry are feeling it as well. Find other businesses that don&#8217;t compete with yours and see about exchanging some flyers or a banner promoting each other&#8217;s business. Or if your business is online, do a link exchange with other businesses. Do not over due the link exchange or Google may lower your organic search results. Be selective in who you work with both online and in the brick and mortar world.</p>
<p><strong>Press Releases can be a very effective way to bring attention to your business</strong>. If you have something that impacts the community, then you can have someone write a press release for you. If you hire someone to do it for you, make sure they know how to write and distribute it. Again, remember the topic must be something that impacts the community and not just a self-serving piece promoting your business.</p>
<p>These are just some of the ideas that will help your business grow in any economy. There are plenty of marketing options out there. You just need to find the ones that work for you.</p>

<p>Do you want them to think your brand is the life of the party, or the designated driver? Is it a trusted friend, or a glamorous rock star? Are you a Volvo or a &#8216;Vette&#8217;?</p>
<p><strong>So I repeat&#8230;who are you?</strong></p>
<p>You may already know this, and if that&#8217;s the case, I congratulate you! Many small businesses struggle with this. If, however, you need a little help in defining yourself, here are a few questions to ask yourself:</p>
<p><span id="more-113"></span><strong>1. How am I currently perceived by my customers?</strong><br />
If you don&#8217;t know, do a quick focus group with a target segment of your market (10 &#8211; 20 people), customers and non-customers. Have a list of questions ready to ask.</p>
<p><strong>2. How do I want to be perceived by my customers?</strong><br />
Realize that your brand needs to reflect and resonate with your target market. If you want to be a sports car, but your customer wants you to be a sedan, you should probably reflect what your customer&#8217;s value unless you&#8217;re trying to attract a different set of customers.</p>
<p><strong>3. How far apart is how I&#8217;m currently being perceived to how I want to be perceived?</strong><br />
What will it take to bridge the gap? Do I really need to bridge the gap, or should I enhance my current image?</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve got a general idea of perception, time to make your personality more definitive. So, ask yourself these questions:</p>
<p><strong>4. What are my brand&#8217;s human characteristics?</strong><br />
As crazy as it may sound to you, many branding experts suggest you do this in order to put your brand on a level everyone in your organization can understand. Is your brand male, female? Old, young? Rich, poor, middle class? Where does it work? What does it do for entertainment? These are just starter questions&#8230;you can think of a lot more yourself!</p>
<p><strong>5. If my brand was an actual person, what would be its name?</strong><br />
Think about it, when you hear someone is names &#8220;Biff,&#8221; an immediate picture comes to your mind. I bet you can think of a dozen such examples! Pick a name that personifies your brand. Paris, Tom, Jane, Inga, Ian, Jeff, Elsa&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>6. What is my brand&#8217;s &#8220;life story?&#8221;</strong><br />
Biff needs to know where he came from, so create a brief, fictional biography of your humanized brand.</p>
<p>Once you figure all this out, consider building a Personality Board. This is very helpful in giving your brand a visual personification. Cut out pictures, stories, headlines, or any other visual reference you think would work to define your personality. You may even want to find a photograph of someone who is the image of your brand personality (your Biff) and place it in the middle. Display it proudly, and make sure your employees know what it is.</p>
<p>Now, when you create your advertising and marketing materials &#8211; from print ads to tv and radio spots, from websites to packaging, and beyond &#8211; you know what personality they need to reflect. And you will be on your way to delivering a brand with which your customers can identify.</p>

<p><strong>Does integrity really matter in online business</strong>? The owners of PCS Productions in Texas would likely say, &#8220;Yes!&#8221;</p>
<p>This company began in 1995 and has worked to develop quality audio and video productions. Their services extend to web design and hosting, audio streaming and print media projects.</p>
<p>This company has worked diligently to establish integrity in each form of media they present. Many of those media specialties interact with other forms of media so they must make sure they can transfer branding ideas from one.</p>
<p><span id="more-108"></span>I think what may be most impressive about this company is they have an extraordinary track record. Client testimonials are glowing and well respected.</p>
<p>If you are known by the company that you keep then this company visibly has a sense of integrity. Their staff has been sent on assignment to virtually every continent in the world and their work is called upon repeatedly by existing clients while others also seek them out for their skills.</p>
<p>So is this a puff piece about PCS Productions? No. In fact I don&#8217;t know anyone who works there, nor have I visited with anyone. So, I guess you could say I am not promoting a service, but pointing to some interesting parallels I often find in the best businesses.</p>
<p>This company has a good reputation and that&#8217;s the point of this article.</p>
<p>As an online business you need to work to establish a reputation that is used as a calling card for potential customers.</p>
<p>The web already has enough scam artists and fly-by-night operations so when I find a point of positivity I cling to it and then point it out to others.</p>
<p>The establishment of a strong work ethic combined with consistently providing the best possible service can do wonders for your business in the long term.</p>
<p>Someone once told me, &#8220;You really should take the high road. There&#8217;s a lot less traffic.&#8221; At first I smiled, but it&#8217;s true. We all know someone who is adept at cutting corners. Perhaps we have encountered a business that left us high and dry after they got our money. We like those &#8216;high road&#8217; companies.</p>
<p>What we want as business owners are those glowing testimonials that profess the depth of our commitment to excellence. These are words that may well encourage others to buy our product or use our service. Those precious words will not come if the customer is just another dollar figure.</p>
<p>As a business owner you place your name and reputation on every order you ship out. You stake the trust others would like to place in you on the way you handle issues that come up.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a whole lot easier to lose a reputation than it is to gain it back. Reputation is an investment in your future. It&#8217;s an investment that can go away if you don&#8217;t protect it wisely. What that means for a business owner is you have to put your customers first. Their concerns need to be a concern for you. Their issues require you be a problem solver. Deliver more than you have to and show absolute respect to your customers. After all, they are the ones you serve.</p>
