195,053 Pinoys help set world record for browser downloads
MANILA, Philippines - A total of 195,053 Filipinos helped set a new world record in the number of software downloads in a 24-hour period last month, the maker of the free Internet browser Firefox said on Thursday.
Mozilla Corp. said its Download Day for its Firefox 3 browser on June 17 set a world record of 8,002,530 downloads in a 24-hour period.
“We did it! We set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. With your help we reached 8,002,530 downloads,” it said in an e-mail to those who downloaded the software during the 24-hour period.
A statement on the “Spread Firefox” site, which hosted the Download Day page, said the 24-hour period lasted from 18:16 GMT on June 17, 2008 to 18:16 GMT on June 18, 2008 (2:16 a.m. June 18 to 2:16 a.m. June 19, Manila time).
The world map on the site showed 195,053 downloads from the Philippines.
Firefox is said to be the closest competitor of world browser leader Internet Explorer of Microsoft.
Mozilla said that ever since it launched Firefox in 2004, it relied on its community to help “spread the word.”
“Thanks to projects including crop circles, newspaper ads, giant stickers, videos, blogs and more we now have over 180 million users in more than 230 countries,” it said. -GMANews.TV
