Atikha is a non-government organization that provides economic and social services to overseas Filipinos and their families in the Philippines.

About Atikha

Atikha is a non-government organization that provides economic and social services to overseas Filipinos and their families in the Philippines. The organization aims to help address the social cost of migration and tap the development potential of migration.

Atikha was initiated in 1995 by a group of migrant returnees, advocates and religious leaders in Laguna. It was established based on a Bread for World-funded study on the impact of migration on women. The study revealed the social cost of migration, especially on the children left behind. It also showed that many migrants are unable to save due probably to a crisis in the work site, in the family, or the migrant herself. Many come home ill prepared to face the future. Often, life has become more miserable. They are much older and have few skills. They cannot be employed nor do they have funds to start their own business.

Atikha was formally established and registered in 1996. Respected community and religious leaders, migrant returnees, sociologists and psychologists, social workers and social entrepreneurs are the people behind Atikha. The founding board was composed of Msgr. Jerry Bitoon (then Vicar General of the Diocese of San Pablo the 1st Hermit), Mother Stella Cordero, Sister Norie Santiago (head of Alay Kapwa and High School Principal of Canossa College) and four Overseas Filipino returnees, Ma. Virginia Melgar, Rebecca Martinez, Serma Chozas and Mai Dizon-Anonuevo(masters in Entrepreneurship, Asia Institute of Management).

The pilot areas of Atikha are San Pablo City in Laguna and the Municipality of Mabini in Batangas.

In the initial years, Atikha focused its work on addressing the social problems brought about by the separation of the Overseas Filipinos and their families. Atikha organizes communities of migrant families by providing psychosocial intervention to enable the community to respond to migration-related issues. It gives focus on the children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and women. It conducted value formation, summer arts and crafts workshops for the children of overseas Filipinos in San Pablo City, Laguna. It also helped form self-help groups among the children of overseas Filipinos. Atikha believes that the social preparation of the families and the community is an important component for an effective reintegration program for migrant workers.

Atikha will continue working on the following:

mobilizing overseas Filipino resources for the development of the Overseas Filipinos, their families and communities;

establishing Overseas Filipino Centers that would provide economic and social services to more Overseas Filipinos, families and members of their communities; and

assisting in developing enterprises for Overseas Filipino investment.

The Institute for Social Entrepreneurship in Asia (ISEA) is a learning and action network set up by social enterprises and social enterprise resource institutions to catalyze knowledge creation, capacity development and movement-building for social entrepreneurship in the region.

About ISEA

The Institute for Social Entrepreneurship in Asia (ISEA) is a learning and action network set up by social enterprises and social enterprise resource institutions to catalyze knowledge creation, capacity development and movement-building for social entrepreneurship in the region.

The past two decades have witnessed a flowering of wealth-creating organizations with a development purpose, or what are now called social enterprises.

The best of these social enterprises are creating new benchmarks for wealth creation and distribution and enabling the poor and marginalized to become effective market players. Social enterprises are also leading the way in developing and transforming markets towards equitable and sustainable development.

However, management of enterprises with a “multiple bottom line” is an art that has yet to be mastered by many development players that enter the market arena. At the same time, the leaders and actors of this unfolding phenomenon of social entrepreneurship are in need of a learning and action network dedicated to evolving the theory and practice of transforming markets in the service of people and the environment.

Vision

The Institute for Social Entrepreneurship in Asia (ISEA) envisions a critical mass of social and development entrepreneurs and enterprises making a difference for the poor and marginalized in the markets of Asia, and creating innovative pathways towards equitable and sustainable development.

Mission

ISEA is committed to harnessing the intellectual, human, social and financial capital in Asian societies in building a learning community and a nurturing environment for the advancement of social entrepreneurship in the region.

Strategic Objectives and Key Result Areas

ISEA aspires to be a leading resource institution nurturing a broad-based learning and action network on social entrepreneurship and enterprise development in Asia. ISEA seeks to synergize and enhance knowledge creation, learning exchange and capacity development among social enterprises and their resource institutions to catalyze the consolidation of what is currently a fragmented social enterprise sector in the region.

ISEA also seeks to build bridges and interfaces between the social enterprise sector and the business community towards creating new models and benchmarks for pursuing social responsibility in the markets of Asia.

ISEA strives to develop a common understanding of social enterprises and their role in promoting social equity and sustainability, towards advancing a movement for social entrepreneurship in the region.

ISEA is pursuing the following major objectives:

To develop the capabilities of key civil society actors operating in various country contexts in Asia (i.e. developed, developing and socialist economy in transition) on social entrepreneurship and enterprise development

To develop an accessible, practitioner-oriented knowledge base on social entrepreneurship and enterprise development generated across various country contexts in Asia

To develop a learning network within civil society across different country contexts that are actively involved in social entrepreneurship knowledge creation and sharing

To build partnerships with the business community to promote mutual learning and develop new benchmarks and models for pursuing social responsibility in the marketplace.

To create partnerships and platforms for social and development entrepreneurs to engage government, academe, media and the business sector in advancing and creating a favorable climate for social entrepreneurship in key countries in the region.

To build a sustainable and viable Institute.
